Greek Theatre Back in the day, religion and storytelling went hand in hand. Lessons were taught to the community through the presentation of characters designed after the Greek Gods. These stories would often include morals such as the inevitability of fate (Oedipus) or the futility of war (Lysistrata). Much of the public was also uneducated, so written scripture had a somewhat small audience. Religion played a much larger role in society and had a greater impact on theatre than it does today. I believe that because of this influence and the necessity to spread religious doctrines to the people, theatre was created to tell these morals to the public in a form that everyone could understand.
